Free Indoor Food Scrap Bins
Free indoor bins are available to qualifying Alameda County businesses, institutions, and multi-family residential properties (5+ units) for the collection of food scraps, compostable paper and plant debris (“organics”). A variety of containers and lids are available—up to a value of $500 per approved site including tax and delivery.
Due to COVID-19, and the current shelter in place order for non-essential activities in Alameda County, the free bin program is currently on hold. You are welcome to submit the form below, however, requests will be processed after the order has been lifted, on or after April 7.
3 Easy Steps to obtain your bins:
- Complete and submit the online form below.
Note: You do not need to know exactly what you wish to order at this stage.
- Wait for application approval and ordering instructions.
Expect a response within 1 to 2 weeks of submitting your application.
- Select equipment and place your order with one vendor.
Review container and lid options offered by our three partner vendors. Select one vendor and place an order up to $500 including tax and delivery. Equipment will be delivered to your site in 2 to 4 weeks.
To qualify, you must:
- Be a business, institution, or multi-family residential property* with 5 or more units located in Alameda County, and;
- Have (or start) compost collection service through your city’s service provider.
Once you order compost collection service, your city’s service provider will deliver outdoor organics carts or bins for pick-up. The indoor containers and equipment offered here are intended to help separate food scraps and food-soiled paper indoors before emptying the contents into the outdoor bins for organics collection by your hauler. Organics collection service may result in additional monthly cost to the property depending on the rates in your jurisdiction.
*Note for multi-family residential properties: If you only need kitchen pails for tenants to collect food scraps, and do not require larger containers for centralized collection, please contact your compost/organics service provider to request kitchen pails. If pails are not available in your city, please complete the form below to request them through this program.
Ineligible Sites: K-12 public schools and district offices, and city facilities are currently not eligible to receive containers in this program.
