Mobile Mini Wins StopWaste Business Efficiency Award

Spotlight: Mobile Mini in Fremont

Mobile Mini in Fremont is part of a worldwide company that leases out secure storage units made from shipping containers and portable ground level offices. They received a 2016 StopWaste Business Efficiency Award for Excellence in Recycling and Composting, for their outstanding achievements in waste reduction. Going well beyond the requirements under the Mandatory Recycling Ordinance, Mobile Mini recycles and composts 93% of their waste—up from 10% in only one year.

“As a Fremont business, recycling is the law for Mobile Mini, but it also makes us more efficient,” remarked Branch Manager Leon Evans. He explained that the changes were in part a result of the company’s initiative to apply Toyota’s “5S” workplace organizing method to their operations. “We evaluated all our procedures and revamped them for efficiency, including how we handle garbage.”

Besides recycling construction materials like sheetrock and pallets, the company is now collecting food scraps and food-soiled paper for composting. Overall they have reduced the amount of garbage from nine cubic yards to half a cubic yard per week, while sending six cubic yards of discards to recycling and 64 gallons to composting.

Mobile Mini’s award was one of eight Business Efficiency Awards presented at the offices of StopWaste, the public agency responsible for reducing waste in Alameda County, on May 25. For more information about the 2016 Stopwaste Business Efficiency Awards visit www.StopWaste.org/2016Awards.
